"In the Netherlands, skin therapist is a recognized profession. It requires a 4-year HBO education and we are paramedics."

There is quite a difference between a beautician, a skin therapist and a dermatologist in the Netherlands. What exactly do they do differently? While a beautician mainly focuses on making healthy skin more beautiful, a skin therapist focuses on skin problems and improves them, without medication.

"As skin therapists, we rarely do basic care, because it doesn't do much."

"A basic cleansing is done a lot by beauticians. This consists of cleansing, squeezing, a mask and then a cream. We do this very little, and the reason for that is that it does not work on the causes of acne: accumulation of dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria. All you do is squeeze it out and thus remove the blockages. While scientifically speaking, this has no advantages at all."
