Five tips for selecting a good skin care product
So many products, so much choice, but which product is the best to buy? Do you ever wonder that when you are looking for a new skin care product? Don't panic, you are not alone! With our five tips, choosing in the future will be much easier!
1. Know your skin
INTERNAL FACTORS (60%)
They are pre-programmed and you cannot change that. Your DNA contains important information about your skin and provides clues about how your skin will age and what you can do about it.
EXTERNAL FACTORS (40%)
External factors such as your lifestyle are not pre-programmed. So you have them under control to a certain extent. Factors such as smoking, sunlight, stress and sleep deprivation all affect your skin.
60% is the basis of your skin and is determined by your DNA
Your DNA makes you who you are. It not only tells you what care your skin needs, but also how prone your skin is to aging. Your DNA does not lie and remains unchanged.
Our DNA products focus on your specific needs resulting from your DNA profile. We collect this information with a DNA test. You can order the DNA test separately or in a package with your products.
2. Be kind to your skin
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and protects us against harmful external influences (micro-organisms, UV rays, pollution...). It is therefore extremely important to take good care of your skin and to support its natural functioning. Many skin care products, especially cleaning products, have a fairly aggressive effect that damages the natural skin barrier . Some products that you better avoid:
- Alcohol
- Aggressive peels & facial scrubs
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
Tip: It is best to clean your face with a mild oil or cleansing milk and rinse with a water-based cleansing lotion.
Some cleaning products
2-in-1 cleanser
Exfoliating tonic
3. Moisturizing ingredients
Moisture-locking ingredients are ingredients that put a kind of film over your skin. They are greasy, waxy substances that prevent the moisture from evaporating from your underlying skin layers. They coat your skin and make it 'lazy', giving you a false sense of hydration. Examples of moisture-trapping ingredients are paraffinum liquidum, paraffin and other mineral oils .
Humectants are 'hygroscopic' molecules that retain moisture. They are naturally present in and on your skin and are sometimes referred to as "natural humectants." They retain the moisture from the air and thus keep the skin supple and hydrated. Examples of humectants are amino acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and urea.
Skin-identical fats are, as the name suggests, also naturally present in the skin. The top layer of your skin consists of cells (corneocytes) surrounded by a mixture of fats, such as ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. In the right proportions, they form a compact structure and thus an intact skin barrier. If your skin is deficient in essential fats, you will get dry skin because the moisture in your skin can evaporate more easily. By using a cream with ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids you help to support the skin barrier efficiently.
DNA analysis & report
Tip: We recommend humectants and skin-identical fats. The concentration of each type of ingredient that your skin needs depends on the degree of hydration and/or the presence of fats in your skin. You can easily measure exactly what you need using your DNA test.
4. Packaging
The packaging of a product is the first thing you see. It is not only important how it looks, but also whether it stores the ingredients efficiently. Many brands still opt for (glass) jars, while that is particularly harmful for most ingredients! Not only are they unhygienic, but many ingredients cannot 'survive' in such an environment. They oxidize too quickly due to exposure to light and air, which reduces their effectiveness. So always check the packaging before looking at the contents!
Tip: Avoid open, transparent glass jars. Opt for opaque and 'airless' pump systems instead.
5. Protect your skin
You only have one skin, so never underestimate the importance of good skin protection and the use of sunscreen. Excessive exposure to UV rays can not only lead to premature skin aging but also to various forms of skin cancer. That is why we recommend using a good day cream with SPF 15, 30 or 50+ every day. Sunscreens can be divided into two large groups: there are the physical (mineral) sunscreens and the chemical (organic) sunscreens.
PHYSICAL SUN FILTER
A physical sunscreen uses minerals (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) to divert UV rays from the skin. Such products literally lie on the skin and block or reflect the UV rays so that they cannot penetrate the skin. Mineral sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB radiation and they cause the least skin irritations . This makes mineral sun filters particularly suitable for people with (hyper) sensitive skin. However, mineral filters have not been used in sun creams for very long because they leave a matte white cast on the skin and are less easy to make.
CHEMICAL SUN FILTER
Chemical (or organic) sunscreens undergo a chemical transformation when they come into contact with UV rays. In doing so, they absorb the energy and release it in the form of heat . Chemical sunscreens absorb both UVA and UVB rays. Unfortunately, they also have some drawbacks that make them not always ideal. For example, some are associated with skin irritations , and others not only penetrate but also penetrate the skin, entering the bloodstream. In addition, they only become effective 20 minutes after application . In addition, they can clog pores and cause acne.
Tip: Apply your day cream with sunscreen in the morning and apply a mineral powder with SPF to your face during the day. This way you stay well protected all day long!
