Vitamin B and beauty

Vitamins are important for the human body and certainly also for the skin. Vitamin B is one of those vitamins, essential for your skin. In a previous blog, vitamin B3 was already discussed, but what other subtypes are there and what else does this vitamin have to offer?

Vitamin B and the skin

Vitamin B is a water-soluble vitamin that the body does not produce itself, but absorbs through food. It is a collective term for no fewer than eight different types, namely: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B8), folic acid (B11) and cyanocobalamin (B12).

A lot, but which ones are really important for your skin? Our previous blog already described the benefits of vitamin B3 for your skin. In addition, vitamins B5 and B12 also contribute to keeping your skin healthy.

Recap positive things vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 or niacinamide has already shown that it is a multifunctional ingredient for your skin. We will briefly explain the most important reasons:

  1. Reduction of hyperpigmentation in the face, more specifically melasma spots
  2. Support of the skin barrier and associated moisture balance of the skin
  3. Antioxidant that helps neutralize oxidative stress
  4. Soothing and calming effect on the skin

What is vitamin B5 and which foods contain it?

Vitamin B5 , pantothenic acid or panthenol (provitamin B5) is a water-soluble vitamin that is important for the repair of the skin barrier. The acid can be found in various types of food: meat, eggs, legumes, whole grain products, milk and dairy products, vegetables and fruit. A varied diet ensures that your body absorbs this vitamin sufficiently.

What impact does vitamin B5 have on your skin?

Vitamin B5 supports the barrier function of the skin . This is very important as this forms the protective layer of our body. If this barrier is well constructed, then our skin is also able to retain sufficient moisture. Because vitamin B5 contributes to a good skin barrier and hydrated skin, it can be used as a 'moisturizer'.

In addition, vitamin B5 also stimulates the renewal of skin cells. This ensures that the skin has a healthy and fresh appearance. We also see an effective effect of vitamin B5 in wound healing and can therefore also be used to improve scars on the skin.

Another positive effect of vitamin B5, though taken orally , is that it can also be used to improve acne and inflammation . Vitamin B5 has anti-inflammatory effects. You can find the study that demonstrates these effects via this link.

Please note, not all products with vitamin B5 are equally effective. The effectiveness depends on the dose and the formulation (a pill or cream/serum). Keep in mind: a cream with a low dose of vitamin B5 (<1%) will not have magical effects on your skin.

What is vitamin B12, which foods contain it and what impact does it have on your skin?

Cobalamin or vitamin B12 is the only water-soluble vitamin that the body stores as a reserve. This vitamin has multiple functions for our body, for example it is necessary for the production of red blood cells that are needed to transport oxygen in the blood and it supports the proper functioning of your nervous system. Sources of vitamin B12 are animal products, such as milk, dairy products, meat, fish and eggs.

Vitamin B12 also plays a role in cell production and is therefore important for healthy growth/renewal of skin, hair and nails . With a major deficiency, the nails can discolour or become brittle and hyperpigmentation or hair loss can occur. With the help of nutritional supplements, the vitamin B12 deficiency can be restored. Don't worry! If you eat healthy and balanced, a deficiency will not occur!

What are the benefits of vitamin B for my skin?

There are many varieties of vitamin B and many play a role in the condition of our skin. The main benefits of vitamin B are briefly mentioned here:

  • Delaying skin aging, with vitamin B3 working most effectively
  • Preventing hyperpigmentation
  • Function as an antioxidant
  • Helps build a good skin barrier and hydrated skin
  • Stimulating wound healing
  • Stimulate production of new cells and ensure healthy skin

Vitamin B3 is very often used in skin care products, such as serums. Vitamin B3 also combines well with vitamin A.
