Vitamin E for your skin

In the previous blogs the following vitamins and their benefits were already discussed: Vitamin A , Vitamin B and Vitamin C. In this blog we will delve deeper into vitamin E. Another interesting ingredient in skin care.

WHAT IS VITAMIN E & WHERE CAN YOU FIND IT?

Vitamin E is a naturally occurring vitamin and exists in eight chemical forms: (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-) tocopherol and (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-) tocotrienol. Alpha-tocopherol is the most relevant form for the human body. The preferential distribution of alpha-tocopherol in the human body over the other forms of tocopherol is due to the faster metabolism and elimination of the other forms. This essential nutrient occurs naturally in many foods. Some examples of vitamin E sources include:

- Vegetable oils (sunflower, corn and soybean oil)

- Nuts (almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts)

- Seeds (such as sunflower seeds)

- Green leafy vegetables (such as spinach and broccoli)

DOES VITAMIN E HAVE BENEFITS FOR SKIN?

YES! Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can help neutralize free radical damage to the skin. Vitamin E protects the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation (photoprotective effect) and thus prevents premature signs of skin aging. In addition to its antioxidant effect, vitamin E also has an anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effect on the skin.

Quick Refresh: Free Radicals, Oxidative Stress & Antioxidants

Free radicals are unstable and reactive atoms that can damage cells in the human body. These unstable molecules come either from internal sources (normal essential metabolic processes in the human body) or from external sources (such as smoking, sun exposure, pollution). Free radicals damage DNA and cell proteins by changing their chemical structure. On the skin level, this damage is visible as fine lines and wrinkles, a dull complexion, pigment spots and the breakdown of essential proteins in the skin. Simply put - the typical signs of skin aging.

Fortunately, our body can neutralize these free radicals with the help of its own powerful antioxidants. However, when the body’s antioxidant-producing capacity is low or overwhelmed by the number of free radicals, damage can still occur and signs of skin aging will be visible more quickly. The body can no longer neutralize the free radicals sufficiently.

Antioxidants are not only produced by the body, but can also be absorbed through food or by applying directly to the skin, using creams or serums that contain antioxidants. Vitamin E is an example of an antioxidant that can be taken orally or applied topically to protect the skin from these damaging radicals.

WHAT CAN NOMIGE DO?

When your own antioxidant-producing capacity is low, it may be important to add antioxidants to your skin care routine.

But how do you know if your antioxidant-producing capacity is low? Well, at Nomige we can determine your genetic risk for low antioxidant protection through a DNA test.

DNA analysis & report

€150.00

Using a DNA kit you can collect your own DNA at home. Once we have received your DNA sample, and after your explicit consent, we will examine your DNA in a certified laboratory.

We determine your genetic skin profile by examining genes that are involved in the most important skin properties & the skin aging process (collagen, antioxidant and hydration). Of these genes, two genes are examined that are involved in your antioxidant defense mechanism, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD-2) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). By identifying the presence of mutations in these genes we can find out whether you are at high risk of low antioxidant capacity or not.

SOME TIPS WHEN SELECTING A PRODUCT WITH VITAMIN E

If you are convinced that your skin needs some extra vitamin E in the form of a skin care product, the following tips can certainly help you choose a good product.

  • Choose a product that contains both vitamin E and vitamin C. These are 2 antioxidants that are even more effective in combination (synergistic effect). A golden duo!

  • Vitamin E, like many other ingredients, is not stable and sensitive to exposure to light and air. It is therefore advisable to opt for a light and airless packaging, such as an airless pump.

  • On a package, the name 'tocopherol' is usually stated instead of vitamin E.

  • The most effective form of vitamin E is 'alpha-tocopherol'.
  • Effective concentration: 1-5%

  • You can use vitamin E during the day, at night, or both.
